Day Eighteen: Bambo Sibiya

Bambo Sibiya was born in Springs in 1986. In his work, Sibiya draws on traditional printmaking techniques and works with acrylic and charcoal on canvas. His work centers around the spirit of “Ubuntu Ngabantu”, a term deriving from Zulu philosophy and translating roughly into: “I am what I am because of who we all are”.

One of the most accomplished “graduates” of the Artist Proof Studio, Sibiya often depicts mothers as the central and most elevated figure in his compositions - conveying the message that despite hardship and unemployment, women still manage to find ways to feed their families, nurture and protect their children and keep their families in relative security.

An Everard Read Gallery artist, he has worked on large-scale linocuts of leading artists such as William Kentridge, Diane Victor, and Colbert Mashile. Sibiya is also the recipient of several awards including the prestigious Gerard Sekoto Award.
